Every value is a manufacturer's published factory loft for the build stated on the model page. A used club may have been bent. Loft alone does not establish how far a club carries.

Published iron lofts at a glance

Lowest, median and highest published loft for each club across 198 manufacturer iron charts from 13 brands. A chart is counted only when it lists that club.

Why the same number has different lofts

The number on an iron is a position in the set, not a fixed angle. Each manufacturer chooses the lofts for each head, and sets aimed at different players use different lofts. That is why one brand's 7-iron can share its loft with another brand's 6-iron or 8-iron. Compare the actual angle, and keep in mind that loft alone does not tell you how far a club will carry: head design, shaft, delivery and strike all matter.

Strong and traditional lofts

Golfers often call a set with lower lofts than usual "strong-lofted" and one with higher lofts "traditional." There is no official dividing line. The chart above shows where a given loft sits among the published charts we hold, which is a more useful reference than a single "standard" number. The database covers the sets we have sourced, not every iron ever made, so treat the distribution as a description of this collection.

Checking a used set

Factory lofts describe a new club built to the stated specification. A used iron may have been bent stronger or weaker, so have the actual club measured when the number matters. Our loft guide explains how loft is measured, and the used iron checklist lists what else to inspect. To compare two complete charts, use the iron comparison; to plan wedges below your pitching wedge, try the wedge gap planner.

Sources: each model page links the manufacturer chart its lofts come from, with the date it was checked. Statistics are calculated from those published figures without adjustment.
