How to identify this generation
- A 5-iron with a Titleist script over 990·B in the cavity and a black DCI badge low at the toe end.
- The DCI name also appears on these Titleist irons; compare their markings before using this chart: DCI Oversize + Gold (1996–1998); DCI Oversize + Black (1996–2000); DCI 962 (1997–1999); DCI 962B (1997–2000); DCI 981, DCI 981SL (1998–2001); DCI 990 (1999–2000); DCI 762, DCI 822OS (2001–2003); DCI 762B (2002–2003).
What to notice in the specifications
- Titleist’s table runs from the 1-iron to PW with D2 swing weights, offsets from .158 in to .080 in and bounce from 1° to 9°.
- DCI 990 lists the same lofts, lies and lengths; the 990 page prints larger offsets (.179–.092 in).
- Titleist publishes the same lofts, lies and lengths for DCI 990 (1999–2000), a different head.
Checking a club you own? These are the maker's published figures for an original build, not measurements of your club, and a source date is not the year it was made. Bending, reshafting or a hosel adjustment changes loft, lie and length, so identify the head by its own markings and have a fitter measure it when its history is unclear.
Read our loft guide for a worked example of comparing the numbers, and our used iron checklist before relying on a seller's description.
