How to identify this generation

  • Titleist’s small Previous Models photo shows a 5-iron cavity back with a black DCI triangle badge at the toe end of the cavity, 962 stamped below it and a Titleist script toward the heel.
  • The DCI name also appears on these Titleist irons; compare their markings before using this chart: DCI Oversize + Gold (1996–1998); DCI Oversize + Black (1996–2000); DCI 962B (1997–2000); DCI 981, DCI 981SL (1998–2001); DCI 990 (1999–2000); DCI 990B (2000–2002); DCI 762, DCI 822OS (2001–2003); DCI 762B (2002–2003).

What to notice in the specifications

  • Titleist’s table runs from the 1-iron to a 60° LW (13 clubs) and also lists offset (.160 in at the 1-iron to +.001 in at the wedges), D2 swing weights through the PW and bounce.
  • The DCI 962B page lists the same lofts and lies for its 1-iron to PW but with .120–.050 in offsets; DCI 962 keeps the heavier .160–.070 in offsets.
Checking a club you own? These are the maker's published figures for an original build, not measurements of your club, and a source date is not the year it was made. Bending, reshafting or a hosel adjustment changes loft, lie and length, so identify the head by its own markings and have a fitter measure it when its history is unclear.

Read our loft guide for a worked example of comparing the numbers, and our used iron checklist before relying on a seller's description.
