Swing weight calculator

Weigh a club, find its balance point, and get its swing weight on the standard 14-inch letter scale (C9, D2 and so on). Then test what a few grams of head or grip weight would change.

Weigh the complete club, grip included. Balance it on a narrow edge and measure from the end of the grip cap to the balance point.

Swing weight

Enter the weight and balance point of one club.

How to measure your club

  1. Weigh the complete club, grip included, on a kitchen or postal scale. Grams are more precise than ounces on most home scales.
  2. Balance the club across a narrow edge, such as a ruler on its side, and slide it until it rests level.
  3. Measure from the end of the grip cap to that balance point. Enter both numbers above.

Small measuring errors matter: half an inch at the balance point moves a typical iron by roughly four swing-weight points. Measure twice and compare clubs measured the same way.

How swing weight is calculated

Swing-weight scales of the Lorythmic type pivot the club on a fulcrum 14 inches from the butt end. The reading is the club's moment about that fulcrum: total weight in ounces × (balance point − 14 inches), in inch-ounces. On this scale C0 equals 196 inch-ounces, each point adds 1.75 inch-ounces, and each letter has ten points, so D0 is 213.5 inch-ounces. These figures are stated in US patent 4,887,815 (1989), which describes the scale. Patent reviewed October 8, 2026.

Example: a 12-ounce club balancing 32 inches from the butt end has a moment of 12 × 18 = 216 inch-ounces, which is 1.4 points above D0, or D1.4.

Adding head or grip weight

Weight changes the moment by its mass times its distance from the 14-inch fulcrum. Weight added beyond 14 inches raises swing weight; weight added between the butt end and 14 inches lowers it, even though the club gets heavier. That is why a heavier grip makes the head feel lighter. The calculator works this out for the exact position you enter instead of using a rule of thumb.

What swing weight does not tell you

Swing weight describes how the mass is distributed along the club, not the total weight, and it says nothing about whether a club suits you. Manufacturers choose their own targets for each model and length. To compare lengths, use the club length converter and our guide to measuring club length.
