How to identify this generation

  • A 5-iron with a gold DCI triangle badge at the toe end of a deep cavity, a Titleist script across the cavity and an OVERSIZE + bar along its lower edge.
  • The DCI name also appears on these Titleist irons; compare their markings before using this chart: DCI Oversize + Black (1996–2000); DCI 962 (1997–1999); DCI 962B (1997–2000); DCI 981, DCI 981SL (1998–2001); DCI 990 (1999–2000); DCI 990B (2000–2002); DCI 762, DCI 822OS (2001–2003); DCI 762B (2002–2003).

What to notice in the specifications

  • Titleist’s table runs from the 1-iron to a 60° LW (13 clubs) and lists offsets from .386 in at the 1-iron to +.010 in at the wedges; it prints no swing-weight or bounce rows.
  • The DCI Oversize + Black page lists smaller offsets (.240 in at the 1-iron) and D2 swing weights with the same lofts, lies and lengths; the badge colour tells the two apart.
  • Titleist publishes the same lofts, lies and lengths for DCI Oversize + Black (1996–2000), a different head.
Checking a club you own? These are the maker's published figures for an original build, not measurements of your club, and a source date is not the year it was made. Bending, reshafting or a hosel adjustment changes loft, lie and length, so identify the head by its own markings and have a fitter measure it when its history is unclear.

Read our loft guide for a worked example of comparing the numbers, and our used iron checklist before relying on a seller's description.
