How to identify this generation

  • A smaller head with a black insert under a silver chevron, a red R9 badge high toward the heel and a shield crest on the toe side.
  • The R9 name also appears on these TaylorMade irons; compare their markings before using this chart: R9 (2009 archive edition); R9 TP B (2010 archive edition).

What to notice in the specifications

  • The chart starts at a 19.5° 2-iron and ends at the AW.
Checking a club you own? These are the maker's published figures for an original build, not measurements of your club, and a source date is not the year it was made. Bending, reshafting or a hosel adjustment changes loft, lie and length, so identify the head by its own markings and have a fitter measure it when its history is unclear.

Read our loft guide for a worked example of comparing the numbers, and our used iron checklist before relying on a seller's description.
