How to identify this generation

  • Round weight ports set into the toe and heel sides of a chrome cavity, with a black-and-gold r7 badge between the upper ports.
  • The r7 name also appears on these TaylorMade irons; compare their markings before using this chart: r7 XD (2005 archive edition); r7 TP, r7, r7 Draw (2006 archive edition).

What to notice in the specifications

  • The LW is marked right-hand men’s only.
  • TaylorMade’s r7 XD (2005) sheet lists exactly the same lofts, lies and lengths for a different head.
  • TaylorMade’s 2007 r7 CGB MAX sheet prints the same lofts and lies with different steel lengths (AW: 35.5 in, SW: 35.25 in, LW: 35 in).
Checking a club you own? These are the maker's published figures for an original build, not measurements of your club, and a source date is not the year it was made. Bending, reshafting or a hosel adjustment changes loft, lie and length, so identify the head by its own markings and have a fitter measure it when its history is unclear.

Read our loft guide for a worked example of comparing the numbers, and our used iron checklist before relying on a seller's description.
