How to identify this generation

  • Adams’ set photo shows five wide-sole chrome irons with a red-and-black a3OS cavity badge beside three hybrids with red crown accents on black graphite shafts.
  • The Idea name also appears on these Adams irons; compare their markings before using this chart: Idea a3 (2008 US page); Idea a7 (2011 US page); Idea CMB (2012 US page); Idea Super S (2013 US page).

What to notice in the specifications

  • Adams sells this set with hybrids in place of the long irons; the same table lists the 3 hybrid (19°, 59.25°, 40.5 in), 4 hybrid (22°, 60°, 39.75 in) and 5 hybrid (25°, 60.75°, 39 in) as loft, lie and length. Those hybrid rows are kept out of the chart.
  • Adams’ separate a3OS hybrid page lists the same 3, 4 and 5 hybrids as standalone heads, plus a 2 and a 6 (see the Idea a3OS hybrid record).
Checking a club you own? These are the maker's published figures for an original build, not measurements of your club, and a source date is not the year it was made. Bending, reshafting or a hosel adjustment changes loft, lie and length, so identify the head by its own markings and have a fitter measure it when its history is unclear.

Read our loft guide for a worked example of comparing the numbers, and our used iron checklist before relying on a seller's description.
