How to identify this generation

  • A chrome hollow head with P·790 in black on a raised bar across the upper back, TUNGSTEN and TaylorMade lettering below it and FORGED on the hosel.
  • The P-Series name also appears on these TaylorMade irons; compare their markings before using this chart: P750, P770 (2017 archive edition); P760 (2018 archive edition); P7TW, P790, P790 Ti (2019 archive edition); P790 (2021 archive edition); P790 (2023 archive edition).

What to notice in the specifications

  • TaylorMade’s 2019, 2021 and 2023 P790 sheets list the same lofts and lies with lengths 1/4 in longer from 3-iron to PW (3-iron: 39 in, 7-iron: 37 in, PW: 35.75 in) and the same AW length.
  • TaylorMade’s 2021 Summer custom component booklet says iron lengths have been listed with the ground-plane method since November 1, 2018, and gives the 2017 P-series as 39.13 in at the 3-iron and 37.13 in at the 7-iron measured that way.
Checking a club you own? These are the maker's published figures for an original build, not measurements of your club, and a source date is not the year it was made. Bending, reshafting or a hosel adjustment changes loft, lie and length, so identify the head by its own markings and have a fitter measure it when its history is unclear.

Read our loft guide for a worked example of comparing the numbers, and our used iron checklist before relying on a seller's description.
