Wedge gap planner

How to plan wedge lofts

1. Find your pitching-wedge loft. Modern sets differ a lot: the 244 iron charts in our database list pitching wedges from 38° to 50.5°. The iron loft finder shows where your set sits.
2. Choose the highest-lofted wedge you want to carry. The 58° starting value is an editable example, not a recommendation.
3. Decide how many wedges fit in your bag, or which loft gap you want between them. The planner divides the span evenly or steps up by your chosen gap.

Worked example

A 46° pitching wedge and a 58° top wedge leave a 12° span. Three wedges split it into 4° steps: 50°, 54° and 58°. With a 43° pitching wedge the exact steps are 48°, 53° and 58°; rounded to even lofts they become 48°, 54° and 58°, so the gaps are 5°, 6° and 4°.

Why round to even lofts?

Every wedge family in our database (11 so far) publishes its loft options in even degrees. Rounding keeps the plan to lofts you can usually find on a wedge head. Some families can be bent a degree or two by a club fitter; ask before assuming it.

What this plan does not tell you

Equal loft steps do not guarantee equal distance steps. Bounce, grind, shaft, swing length and strike all change how far a wedge carries and how it behaves around the green. Use the plan as a starting layout, then measure your carries with the bag gap analyzer. Our wedge loft guide shows typical pitching, gap, sand and lob wedge lofts and explains bounce and the short game in more detail, and the loft gap checker lists the angle gaps across your whole set.
